#9 Cyberbullying K-12

I read an article from nobullying.com about Six Unforgettable Cyberbullying Cases. To begin I will like to say that cyberbullying is the same as bullying except the bully is bullying by means of digital communication. Traditional bullying has been by means of repeated verbal or physical attacks done face to face to the victim or the social circle of the victim. Today, young people are bullying by means of digital communication referred to as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the repeated verbal attacks through the use of technological devices.

The article shared a few cyberbullying cases that were highly publicized across the nation from 2003 till 2012 that ended with school-aged children taking their own lives. Such a tragedy that so many have taken their lives because of the silently way bullies are taunting and threatening their victims. And how students are unaware of their actions and the consequences to their actions. As a result to these cases, several laws have been enacted that addresses cyberbullying and some legislators have expanded their anti-harassment policies and bullying prevention programs.

I believe teachers can alleviate cyberbullying early on in grammar school preferably 4th grade if Digital Citizenship is incorporated in the core curriculum. Digital Citizenship explains and educate users about technology use, abuse, and misuse. It is a technological tool that teaches users how to become digitally responsible.  Today, teachers have the opportunity and therefore should exposed the possible outcome of potential ugliness on the internet. Personally, if students are made aware of their actions and the consequences of their actions early then they will make better choices later.
